Dwarf Planet Makemake Has Its Own Moon
Washington: NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has spotted a small, dark moon orbiting Makemake, the second brightest icy dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt. The moon - provisionally designated S/2015 (136472) 1 and nicknamed MK 2 - is more than 1,300 times fainter than Makemake. MK 2 was seen about 20,921 km from the dwarf planet, and its diameter is estimated to be 160 km across. Makemake is 1,400 km wide. The dwarf planet, discovered in 2005, is named for a creation deit..>> view originalA spectacular coral reef was just found at the mouth of the Amazon and scientists are geeking out
From my bedroom, I can look at someone’s house in rural Canada on Google Maps, but somehow no-one realised this giant coral reef at the mouth of the Amazon existed until now. For one, coral reefs usually only exist where there’s salt water – so you’d assume the single largest freshwater discharge in the world would not provide the ideal conditions. You’d also think that th..>> view originalScientists just discovered a monster black hole formed by 3 colliding spiral galaxies
Scientists have discovered a supermassive black hole with a mass 3 billion times that of the Sun, forming in a distant galaxy some 1.8 billion light-years away from Earth. The galaxy in question is called IRAS 20100–4156, and it's formed from a trio of spiral galaxies that are in the midst of colliding into one another. The discovery of the supermassive black hole at the centre of this collision came by accident, during a test observation of the CSIRO's new telescope – the Australian Square Kil..>> view originalCompetition to name icebreaker will 'avoid Boaty McBoatface situation', minister says
